With most of the talk about Chelsea football club this morning is on the subject of a high profile arrival, news of a potentially high profile departure from Stamford Bridge seems to have slipped under the radar. The pointed refusal of the normally obliging David Luiz to discuss his future plans while on international duty with Brazil has been interpreted as a sign he's on the verge of leaving Chelsea, with Barcelona and Napoli both being touted as the defender's next port of call.
The name of Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina was also being mentioned in conjunction with a move to Barcelona, but with the Nou Camp's incumbent, Víctor Valdés, no longer certain to leave Camp Nou, that particular deal remains up in the air. Should Reina leave Liverpool, our man Andy Hunter on the Merseyside beat has it on good authority that Brendan Rodgers will bring in Sunderland's Simon Mignolet, Stoke City's Asmir Begovic or Reading's Alex McCarthy to replace him. Liverpool suits will be pleased and possibly a little surprised that Luis Suárez appears to have gone almost 24 hours without another public airing of his many grievances, but having resigned themselves to losing the Uruguayan to either Real or Atlético Madrid, will continue working on a deal to bring unsettled Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke in as a replacement.
Yesterday's Mail on Sunday reported that Real's interest in Suárez may be on the wane, as club president Florentino Pérez has had his head turned by the fine hunk of Uruguayan beefcake that is Napoli strikerEdinson Cavani. Whichever of the pair ends up at the Bernabéu, it seems there'll be no peg in the dressing room for Gonzalo Higuaín; the Argentinian international has announced his intention to leave Real and speculation abounds that he may be on his way to Arsenal or Juventus. "I have not decided where I will go, but the club already know that I want to go," he said, after scoring in Real's 4-2 win over Osasuna on Saturday evening. "It was my decision. I feel that this is the end of my cycle here. I came here for £10m and I am leaving for more."
Having taken
less than 10 seconds to open the scoring in a friendly against Ecuador last week, before letting USA Soccer celebrate its 100th birthday with an entertaining 4-3 win over Germany, it's been a busy week for Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski. Things show no sign of slowing down for the affable German, with assorted media outlets speculating that he could be on his way out of the Emirates and off to the Westfalenstadion. Borussia Dortmund are reportedly determined to secure his scrawl as they attempt to replace the Bayern Munich boundRobert Lewandowski. In other German striker news, Bild claims that Bayern Munich's Mario Gómez is off to Napoli.
Expect a raft of amusing biblical headlines to feature on back pages everywhere should Manchester City succeed in their attempts to purchase Spain winger Jesús Navaz from Sevilla. "Everything indicates he will leave," said the Spanish club's boss Unai Emery. "Manchester City are a team I like," said Navaz. That would appear to be that, then, although Liverpool and Real Madrid are also reported to be smiling coquettishly at the 27-year-old.
Real Betis goalkeeper Adrian is reported to be on his way to London to sign for West Ham, where he will serve as Jussi Jaaskelainen's No2. There had been talk that Hammers manager Sam Allardyce was going to offer a contract to either Aston Villa's Shay Given or Besiktas's Allan McGregor, but according to the Mail, "both are on the list of Hull manager Steve Bruce", who has also put in a bid for Leicester City'sKasper Schmeichel. Hull City may well struggle in the Premier League next season, but how many goalkeepers does Brucie think he'll need?
Benfica's Spanish striker Rodrigo, who Bolton Wanderers fans might remember from his loan spell at the Reebok Arena (one goal in 17 appearances) a few years back, is valued at £10m and wanted by Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile in the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven left-back Erik Pieters, who has never been on loan at Bolton Wanderers, is valued at £4m and wanted by Stoke City. Speaking of Dutch defenders,Johnny Heitinga has responded to speculation that he's keen on a move away from Everton by posting the following on his Twitter account. "I have a contract until 2014 at Everton, I care about the club and see what happens." Not having had the best of seasons, Heitinga has made it clear he isn't interested in renewing his contract once it expires and it's believed that Fenerbahce might offer him the change of scenery that helps him rediscover his missing mojo.
